Today I watched two crows swinging on my neighbor's suet feeder. I was
amazed to see them working on the suet hanging upside down and generally
being somewhat clownish. I alerted my neighbor and he said (he was just
in Arizona birding) that he saw a feeder there that was designed with an
opening directly in the center of the bottom to discourage this kind of
piracy. However, a Mexican jay was standing directly under the feeder
and flapping straight up to get a mouthful and then dropping straight
down to eat it..then straight back up again..he said it looked like it was a
yo-yo on a string..and it kept it up for quite a while..sort of aerobic
gnoshing, I guess
