Is it not the purpose of language to communicate. All birders that I know
who go birding (the verb "birding" is not found in many dictionaries)
would understand what you meant by saying "I had a three Whimbrels this
morning".

In fact, I did have/see/witness/discover/observe/view three Whimbrels at
the Kent Ponds this morning.

Or, if there is anyone out there from Philly where I spent many years," Yo
chumpy, dis mornin we was jamin on some bad ass Whimbrels down in Kent"

Or if there is anyone out there from the south where I grew up, "Dang
nation ryder! There was three long-billed chickens at the Kent
stink-hole - to far away for baggin though, would have been right nice
with a few roastin ears too."
