On Tues. Apr 25 Len Steiner & I did our third survey of
Ocean Shore birds this year. We also surveyed 3 times last
year. We are trying to survey once a month from Jan-May &
again in July & Sept or Oct. Tues we birded from 1020 to
1450 starting on the ocean side & going south to the jetty,
then east to the sewage ponds & Damon Pt., then north along
No. Bay. We make 20-25 stops and on a map of the area we
keep track of the number of each species at each stop. We
got a total of 50 birds this trip, compared to 35 in Mar.
and 40 in Jan. There were 12 new species we hadn't seen in
any previous trip. They were: 4 Brewer's Blackbirds--
3 S-b Dowitchers, 10 Pigeon Guillemots--192 Pacific Loons--
1 Black Oystercatcher--26 Semi-palmated Plovers--20 White-
crowned Sparrows--2 Forster's Terns--1 Swainson's Thrush--26
Savannah Sparrows--11 Pelagic Cormorants--226 Brant. We also
saw large numbers of Western Sandpiper, Bufflehead, Herring
Gull, Surf Scoters & Caspian Terns. Other birds of interest
were 8 Eared Grebes, 2 Marbled Godwit, 1 Hooded Merganser,
12 R-b Mergansers, 5 B-b Plovers, 24 Black Scoters, 6
Surfbirds, 5 Whimbrel, & 5 Black Turnstones.
Our total species for six trips is 86. This was the first
trip we didn't see any raptors.
