northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

>From April 22, Mike Denny reports two EURASIAN WIGEONS in a flock
of 600+ AMERICAN WIGEONS on Whitcomb Island in southwestern Benton
County Washington. Whitcomb Island is on the Columbia River along
Washington 14. Also there were a pair of TUNDRA SWANS and in
southwest Benton County Mike saw 7 NORTHERN ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and
3 SWAINSON'S HAWKS. See Washington DeLorme p. 28, b-2.

Dick Johnson and his ornithology class saw the GREAT EGRET April
22 still at the south end of Rock Lake, near the boat launch, in
northeastern Whitman County, Washington. Also there were 2
CASPIAN TERNS. See Washington DeLorme p. 72, c-3.

Clare Wiser observed 2 HERMIT THRUSH at The Nature Conservancy's
Rose Creek Preserve north of Albion, Washington in central Whitman
County on April 22. See Washington DeLorme p. 57, b-7.

BLUE JAYS numbering 1 to 4 are still being seen in northeast
Moscow. If you're interested in them, check between Homestead,
the Polk Extension and the neighborhoods bordering Orchard
Avenue. They're quite nomadic, but visiting feeders in this
area. Dave Holick observed 2 birds April 22 along Orchard Avenue.

Dick Johnson reports SORA and VIRGINIA RAIL calling on April 22 at
Winslow Pool in Turnbull NWR south of Cheney, Washington. Head
south from Cheney on the Cheney Plaza Road to the refuge. See
Washington DeLorme p. 72, a-4.

Five BUSHTITS were seen by Mike Denny up Rock Creek Canyon in
central Klickitat County Washington on April 22. Also there was a
LEWIS' WOODPECKER. Rock Creek Road joins Washington 14 about
half-way between the John Day Dam and West Roosevelt. See
Washington DeLorme p. 27, c-5.

Dave Holick reports a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL is being seen regularly
northeast of Moscow near Robinson Park. From the intersection of
Mountain View and Joseph in Moscow, follow the signs to Robinson
Park. Turn right as you reach the park and follow it past the
park manager's trailer. Here you begin up a long hill - toward
the top check the power lines on the north side of the road. Dave
has been seeing the bird between 5:30 and 6 pm on his way home.

Dale Goble reports FOX SPARROWS singing on territory in the Vassar
Meadow area north of Deary and Helmer and west of Bovill, Idaho.
Dale heard and saw birds as he walked the draws last weekend. At
least for me, the easiest way to Vassar Meadows is to take Idaho 8
from Moscow toward Bovill. About 1.5 miles south of Bovill, turn
left, west onto Forest Service Road 3347. Follow it west through
the meadows and eventually you'll return to Idaho 9 between Deary
and Harvard. See Idaho DeLorme p. 58, b-2.

Dick Johnson reports a pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS excavating
a nest site at Fields Spring State Park in southern Asotin County
Washington. Take Washington 129 south from Asotin and Anatone to
the park. The birds were working in a tree near the junction of
the road to the campground and the road to Wahewa (sp?) Lodge.
See Washington DeLorme p. 43, d-7.

Clare Wiser reports 2 SWAINSON'S HAWKS circling the WSU campus in
Pullman on April 22. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS are singing on
territory in my Paradise Ridge yard south of Moscow and at Fields
Spring State Park according to Dick Johnson. Reports of NASHVILLE
WARBLERS came in from several folks, including Mike Denny who saw
them in College Place on April 24 and 28, Dave Holick who saw them
in Moscow on April 22, and myself who heard them singing in my
yard all of this past week.

Dick Johnson reports 2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS 2 miles north of
Rock Lake Washington near the intersection of Miller Road and
Rock Lake Road on April 22.

Mike Denny reports a SOLITARY VIREO in his College Place, Washington
yard today, April 28, along with NASHVILLE and ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS and EVENING GROSBEAKS. Today Mike also had his first
WESTERN KINGBIRDS of the season near McNary NWR at Humorist Road,
a WESTERN FLYCATCHER at the Yakima River Delta, 100+ AMERICAN
PIPITS along US 12 south of McNary NWR headquarters, and up 9 MIle
Canyon, which is 5 miles west of Touchee, Washington, Mike saw
TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHER and DUSKY FLYCATCHER.

I had a male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD at my feeder April 27. Finally,
Phyllis Wicks, who has a large yard on Orchard Avenue in north
Moscow, added BUFFLEHEAD to her yard list this past week.

Good birding!
