I also remember pipits both from the mountains and their now somewhat odd
wintering grounds in the South. At UC San Diego, a great place for both
wintering pipits as well as quite regular horned larks was the baseball
field; an island of grass in scattered weeds. This was right next to my
commuting bike trail so it was easy to follow their presence. Another
odd regular wintering spot was the golf driving range-their you could
usually count on Says phoebe on somje of the yardage markers.

A few years ago I hiked a small amount at the end of the road at the
Mt.Baker ski area in mid summer. We had crummy overcast weather, but hte
birds seen in the few patches of wet grass between the snow filed were
pipits,
