Louise, your description is very consistent with immature Rufous sided
towhees. First year birds can be confusing, and a lot of sparrows are
quite indistictive until they get their adult plumage. The feeding
behavior also fits this. I was very confused by some larger birds last
summer until I figured out they were young of the year orioles.
