Since Don Baccus' response to my comment started this, I though I'd chime
in. Mr. Remsen's e-mail gave us four choices; I decided in approachin
this process that I would choose one of these. I eliminated one without
Island, and without worrying about hyphens, I looked closely at B and D.
I really took teh posting from Mr. Rauch in mind and would consider Scrub
Jay and Florida Scrub Jay to be okay as the answer to the beginner would
be "that one lives in Florida." I didn't like western and couldn't think
of anything better besides that I could vote totally for (California was
closest given good arguments that have been made, but my lifer scrub jay
was from Colorado, and when you grow up in the midwest, that's where you
go for these as a lifer). Thus, the title western, not the lack of the
title Florida Scrub, led me to choose B over D.
As I said before, after an experience in discussing
PAcific-slope/western a couple weeks ago, I think keeping the base common
name in most cases acceptable (thought the split of the western shows the
problem with western and indeed the range of Pacific Slope in ORegon is
showing the problem of the other names). Scrub Jay and Florida Scrub
Jay, given the geographic distance, is a viable alternative, but I
decided to stick to the choices given.
Now, as I look outside, it's time to bird. The gorgeous adult
Bald Eagle soaring over the Portland City Archives around 2 hours ago has
pointed out to me that inside is not the place to be. On to Bay Ocean
Spit tomorrow (Portland Audubon Society field trip, starts at noon, meet
at the parking lot at the Bay Ocean Spit just west of Tillamook; call me
at 503-222-5305 if you interested and want directions).
