This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Most of the action this past week was at Mann Lake near Lewiston,
Idaho. On July 29 Dan Simpkins had 15 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, a
single SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 19 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and on
August 3 he also saw a single STILT SANDPIPER and a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS. I was there on August 2 and observed a single
AMERICAN AVOCET and the rest of the crew already mentioned, plus a
few WESTERN GREBES. To get to Mann Lake, take US 12 West into
Lewiston and cross the Clearwater River. Immediately after
crossing the bridge, take the first left toward East Lewiston and
turn left onto Main Street. Follow it to the blinking light and
turn right there onto Lindsay Creek Road (Nez Perce County Road
460). Follow it about 5 miles to Grelle Avenue. Turn left onto
Grelle. After making the 20 m.p.h. right hand turn, turn left.
You'll see a sign for Mann Lake. Continue straight to the dead
end. There's pretty good mud at the main parking lot and finally
mud is starting to show at the east end of the lake by the model
airplane club. Look for dowitchers in the smartweed on the east
side. See Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1.

John and Amy Roberson report a few shorebirds at Blanchard Lake in
Bonner County, Idaho. Last weekend they had a few GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, and 2 BLACK
TERNS. From Blanchard, drive south 1 mile on the Poyier (Poy-yea)
Ranch Road to the fork. Take the left fork onto what looks like a
private farm road. It's about 0.1 mile to the lake. This road
and lake are both on private ground but are commonly used by the
locals. Please respect the owners and give them a call before
birding the lake. Call Sonny Poyier at 208-437-3371. See Idaho
DeLorme p. 62, extreme lower left corner.

The Roberson's also report 100+ WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS near Salmo
Mountain in extreme northeastern Pend O'reille County, Washington.
To get there, head east from Metaline Falls on Sullivan Lake Road
about 4 miles to the lake. There, take Sullivan Creek Road, also
known as Forest Road 2220, 15 miles further east. Roberson's saw
crossbills from that point on for another 5 miles. See Washington
DeLorme p. 119, a-8.

Good birding!
