Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This
recording was made Thursday, August 3rd. If you have anything to add,
call Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

A CURVE-BILLED THRASHER has been reported from the Toketee ranger
station on the upper Umpqua River, east of Roseburg. This elusive bird
was first observed JUL 12. It was not identified again until AUG 1. It
has been heard singing from time to time, and appears to be on territory
in a brushy area at the base of a cliff face near the residential area
of the station. It is thought to be a palmeri race of the CURVE-BILLED
[THRASHER].

On JUL 31 an immature male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD began coming to
Wilson Cady's feeders in Washougal [WA]. Many RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are
coming to the same feeders.

Shorebird movements have slowed somewhat, as most of the adult birds
have moved south, and the main movement of juveniles are yet to arrive.
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were reported from many coastal areas. One was
found at a farm pond near Wamic, (Wasco Co.) JUL 29. Many LESSER
YELLOWLEGS were reported during the week.

One of the GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL nests at the Willamette Falls, in Oregon
City, hatched 3 young during the week. The second nest was abandoned.

On AUG 1 both BLACK-BACKED and THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS were seen in the
Avid Burn area north of Timothy Lake, in Clackamas Co.

A breeding plumaged HORNED GREBE and two LESSER SCAUP were seen above
Bonneville Dam JUL 28.

A male RED CROSSBILL was heard singing JUL 29 near Frog Lake, in the
Cascades. There is a good cone crop and crossbills are increasing. It is
time to watch for White-winged Crossbills.
