Howdy--

I talked with the researcher yesterday and learned the following:

The plots are 100 meters square and widely scattered around Fort Lewis with
the exception of the artillery impact area and the housing area. Everything
in the plots was counted--mammals, plants and birds. A metal stake marks the
plot boundary and the person counting begins at the stake and sets off
walking on a predetermined random azimuth. He walked for 6 minutes
recording every bird he saw and/or heard. He then rested for 8 minutes and
turned around and walked 6 minutes back to where he began.

There were 105 species recorded in this same general area..
