Randy Tate is the Congressman from my district, and I have written him
several times, on the ESA and on the amendments to the clean water act. I
have received his form letter twice. After the first one I pointed out to
him that (at least as I read in the paper) his example:

> For example, one Montana man was
>recently fined $4000 by the Environmental Protection Agency for
>shooting a bear which was attacking him and his family.
>

was off base, that what happened was the rancher was fined for shooting a
bear that was killing his sheep, and the rancher then told the news that he
would have been fined for shooting the bear even if it had been attacking his
family. Nevertheless, Randy keeps reprinting the "example".

Tate's voting record is clear enough. He only votes the same way Linda Smith
votes. He hasn't a clue about what is going on in the world, in my humble
opinion.

At least, though, his letters are a little closer than one I finally got from
Slade Gorton. Slade thanked me for sending him a letter supporting the
downsizing of government, and said that "it's letters from folks like you
that keep me convinced I'm right" (or approximately that, I don't remember
the exact quote). I have never sent Gorton any letter supporting government
downsizing. (He did finally send me a copy of a news paper clipping
outlining his views on the ESA).

These people are hell bent to do whatever they can to do away with
environmental laws, and I hope enough people out there are beginning to
realize it. I also hope all tweeters are watching this and getting the word
out to others.
