RE: No on Referendum 48 Campaign

On July 21, the No On 164 Coalition turned in over 231,000 signatures to put
Referendum 48 on the November ballot! Thank you to those took part in the
grassroots effort that resulted in such a success. In just 77 days and
thousands of volunteer hours we turned in more signatures than the proponents

of I-164.

But we can't sit back and relax just yet--People For Puget Sound and the
other 26 coalition members are increasing our efforts to ensure a victory in
November. Because the broad base of support that got us to this point must
be strengthened and expanded, I urge all of you (and your family and friends)

to get involved in the campaign to defeat Referendum 48. HereUs how:

Neighbors Say No Parties. Host a small gathering to tell your friends about
the dangers of R-48, raise some money, and have fun! Parties are being
planned statewide on August 27 and September 10 (although you could have one
anytime). I can get you materials and ideas if you would like to participate

in this way.

Speakers Bureau. Next week, August 15-19, message trainings will be held for

everyone who is planning on speaking to large or small groups about 48--its
is very importatnt that we are all delivering the same message. Let me know
as soon as possible if you would like to attend a training, and we can get
you the details. Let me know if you need a speaker to talk to your
organization, school, church, or business about the importance of defeating
Referendum 48 and how to get involved in the campaign.

Free Media. Even though the campaign will be using paid media to reach a
large number of voters, we must also be constantly using the newspapers and
radio to keep our message out in front. Letters to the editor and calls to
radio talk shows are extremely important from now until November 7. Call me
if you need more information to do this.

Volunteering for the campaign in your county. Every county in the Puget
Sound region will have coordinated volunteer efforts. Tasks include
literature and yard sign distribution, voter identification, phoning,
doorbelling, and many other tasks. In King County, every legislative
district will have co-chairs to help organize--let me know if you have an
interest in these positions.

Thank you again for helping get this on the ballot, and thank you in advance
for joining the campaign efforts. Please call me at (206) 382-7007 with any
questions, to let me know how you want to get involved, and to locate the
coordinator in your county. Below is People For Puget Sound's position
statement on Referendum 48.

REFERENDUM 48:
People For Puget Sound's Position Statement

People For Puget Sound opposes Referendum 48. We will work collaboratively
with the No On 48 Coalition to defeat Referendum 48 by urging voters to
reject the measure on the November 7, 1995 general election ballot. Here's
why Puget Sound can't afford Referendum 48:

% 48 is the taxpayer's worst nightmare. A few special interests such
as timber, real estate, agribusiness and building groups will profit at
taxpayer's expense.

% 48 means more red tape. State, county, and local governments will
spend taxpayer dollars creating bureaucracy, and performing costly studies
that will jeopardize community safeguards.

% 48 will create endless, costly court battles. Lawyers will have full
employment trying to decipher this costly can of worms.

% 48 will damage our quality of life in Puget Sound. Private profits
will be given priority over protection of water, wildlife, open space, public

health and the character of our neighborhoods.
