Hi Tweets!

I have pasted together the responses I received about Caspian tern
distributions in the in 1995. Thanks you to those of you who
contributed! There are some good leads in here, but a little more
digging would help. If you have any other observations please send
them to me.

Thanks,

Mike Scuderi

REPORTED CASPIAN TERN SIGHTINGS - 1995

OREGON COAST

We had a few on Saturday at Tillamook
(actually 50+, no make that 100+, I;m now recalling more flocks).
There were immatures, but probably only 1 or 2 in 10 were young (an
unscientific and memry-clogged estimate).

SAUVIE ISLAND

There have been a few at Sauvie Island just north of Portland as well.
Had about 5 there ten days ago.

COLUMBIA RIVER

There is a large Caspian Tern colony in Columbia R, about 6 mi
from where I live (Naselle, Pacific Co., WA). I have been hearing
and seeing both juv and ad Casp Tns flying over our home for
at least a couple of wks now. I have not noticed an especially
bigger number compared to other yrs -- max of e.g., 10 per
day make it over our way. So, I would say tentatively that
matter has not been transferred / created in our tern colony
area, however I do not have access to actually go there and
find out.

OCEAN SHORES

There seem to be quite a few Caspian Tern juveniles along the beaches
at Ocean Shores. Numbers in the dozens rather than hundreds.

Between July 26-28 I observed several young Caspian Terns following
adults along the beaches (there were numerous adults coursing up and
down the beaches as well).

EVERETT

The Caspian Tern colony at Everett Naval Base is now extinct. John
Flavin tried to create a new site on nearby jetty island. However
that was unsuccessful and the terns were egg dumping all over the
southern end of the island.

Everett: John Flavin reports only FOUR juveniles in the Everett area
for the
1995 season. An estimated 2,500 young were raised on the Navy base in
1994.
Obviously, the Navy s displacement program was successful.

DUNGENESS

I heard that Caspians started breeding at Dungeness Point this summer.
No details on numbers though I think it was small.

PADILLA BAY

Padilla Bay: John also told me that Caspians nested somewhere in the
Padilla
Bay area, raising 700 young. His source is Ruth Milner (sp?) with
WDFW. This
site, I believe, would be a new colony for the state.

VANCOUVER ISLAND

Things look normal here on s. Vancouver Island. We normally see
relatively few CATE (rated as Rare to Uncommon through the summer
months) and about the usual number of reports have so far reached the
Victoria Rare Bird Alert, with no large concentrations. No one
has reported a juvenile bird.
