Audubon Society of Omaha, I believe that the local chapter received 5
dollars for every member from the membership fee (it's been a few years
and this may have changed, been raised, etc.). Thus, support of local
Audubon efforts is funded in only a small way by the National
organization (5 dollars out of 35 for a membership). Local efforts such
as field trips, seminars, Birdathons, and others are done to gain dollars
for the local chapter because they receive so small a contribution. The
Palouse Audubon Society in Pullman-Moscow is a good example of an
organization very reliant on local efforts to keep going.
I'll note that when I joined Audubon last week, I joined the
Friends of the Portland Audubon Society, not the national, so my $25
stayed here in the area. There are too many nebulous levels of
adminstration in national organizations for my taste.
