I received the following from Greg Gillson with regard to the OBOL
protocol.
The crux here is dealing again with what is "in moderation."
Greg, for example, who runs The Bird Guide (both newsletter and pelagic
trips) posts his trips monthly as prescribed (he's posted his last trip
twice due to the change in the schedule of his trips because of fishing
success on the Oregon coast; the charter boat is making too much money on
fishing again). Beyond these, there are few announcements beyond a few
personal sales.
Field trip announcements came up by sort of acclaimation.
Several people had a conversation, and it was generally felt that it
would be good if the trips were posted. The geography of the Willamette
Valley is such that one can easily drive to Salem or Corvallis to meet
with a group and go on a trip (or those from there can drive up here).
There are also, for example, birders in outlying areas who join up with
trips; several people from the Tillamook area joined up with PAS's
Tillamook trip.
I've left subscription instructions attached below for those
interested; Greg's address is also below--he is the list owner to contact
for questions.

OBOL Guidelines
Oregon Birders On-Line!

The purpose of OBOL is to keep its members up-to-date on unusual and
rare birds seen recently in Oregon. Rare Bird Alerts should be posted
here right away. The Portland Audubon RBA weekly phone message is
posted here weekly. Unusual sightings from the past weekend's birding
are welcome. Postings of Oregon field trips, bird count announcements,
etc. also belong on this list.

Postings of a commercial nature, as long as they deal with birding,
are acceptable in moderation. Once per month is a good limit.

Please refrain from posting "political" (write your congressman)
messages. Discussions of the control of Starlings, guns, cats, etc.
should be avoided.
