Thanks for your reply.
The Bushtit occurred to me too, and I guess I shouldn't rule it out.
However, the nest they described was more a cup of grass than the hanging nest I know. Do they ever build such a nest? Also, the bird they described had a definite dark hood.
I realize of course, that people may have difficulty describing a bird if they aren't experienced at making such observations. I'm just happy that my enthusiasm for birds is getting some interest.
Earlier this summer another co-worker described a bird he had never seen before. I immediately knew it to be a Western Tanager. How can you miss a male in breeding plumage? It's fun being "the guy to ask".
