The following method suggested by Dennis Paulson is a good alternative
for non-Unix users

The above point out the advantage of using your local editor/word
processor to do your searching. The real beauty of this method is
once you have found the occurences of your keyword, you can (also
using the editor/WP features) write the postings to a file, thus
creating a seperate file consisting of only the thread of interest.

If your really motivated, write some macros to do the cutting and
pasting for you. Thus, for example, with the VI editor, once an
occurence of chickadee has been found, a single keystroke will then
cut the entire posting and paste it into the new file. This would
use the fact that each posting begins with a "From" at the
beginning of a line (with no colon). (You may have noticed that anytime
you have a sentence beginning with From in your E-mail message,
at the beginning of a line, the mail program automatically converts it
to "> From")

I suppose on a rainy Sunday afternoon, you could sit down and write
an ED script which would take the entire archive collection, go
through it, and automatically cut and paste all postings containing
chickadee, removing most of the garbage in the header.
I don't believe that the list processor will do this as it stands now.
