Turner and Rose say that "races differ mainly in the tone of the under
parts and the extent of the breast band". None have a buffy rump. BTW, I
did not mention that the length of the forked tail on this bird was about
half of what a adult barn swallows tail would be.

At the time we were watching it, we also considered Red-rumped Swallow.
But, it just didn't work. The Red-rumped has a buffy collar and lacks
tail spots.

This bird had characters of both birds strongly enough to rule out an
aberrant individual of either species.
