Hello this is Portland Audubon's Rare Bird Alert. This recording was made
Thursday, August 24. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

On August 20, an UPLAND SANDPIPER was found at Leadbetter Point,
Washington. A STILT SANDPIPER was at Bandon Marsh August 19. Single
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were at both areas. A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was at
the South Jetty of the Columbia River August 22 and 23.

Small flocks of SOOTY SHEARWATERS are now showing up off the beaches.

Up to 3 MARBLED GODWITS have been at the Bayocean Shorebird Flats at
Tillamook Bay all week along with several WHIMBREL and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.
CASPIAN TERNS are decreasing along the coast now as MEW GULLS increase.

An ELEGANT TERN was at Grays Harbor, Washington August 13, but so far none
have been seen in Oregon. There has been a very noisy MONK PARAKEET at the
Seaside Sewage Ponds most of August.

A pelagic trip out of Newport August 20, found a SKUA, all 3 jaegers, with
13 LONG-TAILEDS, but few albatross or shearwaters. Five BULLER'S
SHEARWATERS were seen however.

Up to 7 GREAT EGRETS were at Yaquina Bay and 2 were at Tillamook Bay and 2
at Forest Grove during the week. Up to 7 have been seen on Sauvie Island.
On August 12, three juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and 3 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS were on Sauvie Island. Good mud flats are now showing on the
Island but shorebirding has been slow.

Two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were on Sauvie Island August 19. On August 20 a
juvenile SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was at Fern Ridge Res. near Eugene. An
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was there the same day.

Night migrating SWAINSON'S THRUSHES have been passing over Portland most of
the week as most landbird migrants begin moving southward.

RED CROSSBILL juveniles are now being seen in the Cascade Mountains as
these birds become more conspicuous. On August 18, a juvenile GRAY-CROWNED
ROSY FINCH was on the top of Lookout Mountain in Hood River County. It
apparently flew in from Mt. Hood then continued on to the southwest into
Wasco County. Two WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were at Wamic August 19.

On August 20, a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and a SANDERLING
were at Haystack Res. near Madras in Central Oregon. A CASPIAN TERN and
several DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were there also.

VAUX'S SWIFTS are again gathering each evening at Chapman School in
northwest Portland. Several thousand should be using the chimney there
during the next several weeks. Check it out if you are in the area, its
quite a show.
