He was labeled a communist because of favorable books he wrote about the
Communists in Siberia. Therefore he couldn't be admitted to the US, and I
believe that he felt it wasn't worth the bother to try.

However, in fact Farley Mowat is one of the favorite authors of my wife,
who considers Rush Limbaugh too liberal. Personally I think Rush is a giant
bag of wind and is being taken seriously by too many people, but that's
another post.
