Dennis said that because bullfrogs are a 'huntable edible
species', the Dept. of Fish & Wildlife would want to maintain
it and thus must have hunting regulations. Dennis, you are
obviously carrying some heavy baggage about the department. I
certainly have seen no evidence that this is the case with the
bull frog. Even those who relish frog legs (include me in
that group) recognize that bull frogs are detrimental to
native wildlife and wish they could be effectively reduced.
As Kelly indicated, the only reason the Commission did not
take them off the game list is that they sincerely felt that
as long as they are considered a 'game' species, they would be
more attractive to people and therefore people would be more
likely to take them. I don't believe that this strategy is
working but the reason for it was in good faith, NOT an effort
to provide for more 'consumptive' use of wildlife.
I suspect the Commission would welcome public comment on this
issue at their public meetings. They have been searching for
ways to bring other constituents into their proceedings.
