I don't know the answer to your question, but I witnessed a similar event
when I was in graduate school on the east coast. One late summer evening
(1983?) over fields and a tidal inlet along the northshore of Long Island, NY
(near Stony Brook), the sky was filled with nighthawks moving southward.
Numbers were easily in the hundreds, it reminded of a late summer swallow
flock as they darted all around low in the sky.
