Not many birds seen down at Ocean Shores at the weekend- mainly as I was all
day digging interesting critters out of the sand. After 4, 160m transects,
with sampling sites every 20m and 4 samples per site - each sample 101 mm
diameter x 80mm deep, its all I can do to type this, phew science is hard work
!!!!

Anyway what birds I did see were:

28 whimbrel
200+ pintail flying south
thousands of sanderling
28 dowitchers - flew past at eye level, 20 feet away - WOW !!!!!
hundreds of black scoter flying south
hundreds of western sandpipers flying south and feeding on beach
dozens of brown pelicans
barn swallows - trickle of birds flying south all day
30-40 green winged teal flying south

For the last couple of weeks there seems to be a big passage of ducks down
the coast at this time, particularly scoters and mainly black scoters at that.
Fall migration is certainly big and a lot better than I usually experienced
in Scotland. Not much happening on the passerine front but lots of activity
everywhere else !!!!

Stuart
