Irene Wanner asked about books on bird migration, so I'm posting my answer
on tweeters as well as to her.

Any ornithology text would have at least a little discussion about bird
migration, as does The Birder's Handbook.

But there's much more detail in two recently published books:

Bird Migration, A General Survey, by Peter Berthold, Oxford U. Press, 1993.

Bird Migration, by Thomas Alerstam, Cambridge U. Press, 1990. Originally
published in Swedish in 1982, so not as up-to-date as Berthold's book, but
a much more extensive treatment.

We're in need of a popular book on bird migration for North America, but
there is an older one, packed full of good info:

Migration of Birds, by Frederick C. Lincoln, revised by Steven R. Peterson,
1979. Circular 16, Fish & Wildlife Service, Dept. of Interior (used to be
available through government publications office in downtown Seattle).

Most of what we've learned in recent decades is about orientation--how
birds are able to migrate accurately.
