Sunday John F. and Richard (of Vashon Island) led a SAS trip to Ocean
Shores, We arrived there approximately 9:45am. We had a short stop to look
at 16 Greater Yellow legs at the North Beach Junior High School and to
provide nutrients to the horde of ravished mosquito's awaiting our
arrival. Next was a stop at Oyhut State Park (and restrooms), then on to
birding. Took Duck Lake to River View St SE, left to Chinook Ave SE, still
going south to a house with a very large red Fushia bush in the front
yard. The owner's came out with binocs to watch the birds with us as they
could only id maybe hummers. We "had" 8 warblers species. We then checked
out Bills Spit and all the seal lions basking in the sun. Over to Browns
Point/North Jetty for the usual birds that are way out there. Lunch was
by the cement water tower. A passing unidentified birder in a red bronco
type truck told us the Buff-Breasted Sandpipers were over at the fresh
water pond on Damon Point, now our next stop. We then headed back to
Bills spit to look for Curlews and Godwits. Then back again to Damon Point
only this time all the way out to the end for the usual except there was a
large Sunfish that had washed up on the shore at high tide a few weeks
ago, it was big, just stay up wind from it. Now over to the sewage
treatment ponds for gulls, we serendipitously decided to walk out to the
point around back, after 10 or so minutes,( I had wandered off to inspect
a dead gull (2nd yr Heerrmann's)). Back with the group looking off into
the Game Range we had a 45 second s l o w fly by of a Sooty Shearwater.
Total species seen 71, in 8 hours of birding at Ocean Shores.
Weather was sunny, about 70 degrees.

We may not have been looking for a "single species" but, I think we birded
the area over and over, low tide, high tide; morning coolness at 10, heat
of day at 3pm, to think that one small area brought such a varity of birds,
hummmm.
