With all the talk about bats yesterday, I took my 5-year-old out to our
back yard in west Olympia yesterday evening.

As the light faded, our first bat - a Myotis - grabbed a flying termite
about 6 feet away from us! There weren't a lot of termites, and they
were all flying low - less than 15 feet high. The bats were likewise
staying low, and we saw just one at even treetop level. My guesstimate
is that there were about 6 bats, all small, over the yard.

The bird link:

As light faded so that we could no longer see the bats against the
clouds, I heard the yelp of a Canada Goose (B.c. moffitti). 13 of these
birds appeared out of the gloom, set their wings over us and faded again
into the darkness toward Budd Bay without another sound...

The boy was impressed.
