Well, perhaps it was mass hysteria. :)

Chatting with one of the other people who saw this, and she says "I thought it
was one distinct band of white on the tail. And I don't think it came to a
point - it did narrow to a small end, though."

She does agree with me, that it was a steady flap, flap, flap. And there were
crows flying nearby to compare it with - definitely bigger than the biggest
crow. She also confirms the buff wings, and it being about 3' across.

Like I said, I tried to go for the most common bird first - but it just didn't
fit any of the commonly seen hawks around here. The white bands were so
*very very* distinct (perhaps the two bands I saw was a white rump and one
band?).

I told her we will have to sit out on her deck every evening to try to see
this bird again.

Sigh!
