Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday, August 31. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls

A weak storm front August 26 brought 101 ARCTIC TERNS, 10 COMMON TERNS,
both PARASITIC and POMARINE JAEGERS, and over 100,000 SOOTY SHEARWATERS to
the South Jetty of the Columbia River. On the shorebird flats by the jetty
that day was a juvenile CURLEW SANDPIPER. It was not relocated after that
high tide.

On August 30 a loudly calling RUFF flew over the South Jetty shorebird
flats but did not land. It disappeared over Trestle Bay and may still be in
the area. An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was in the South Jetty area August 25.


Among 120 terns at Alsea Bay August 28, were five ELEGANT TERNS and one
ARCTIC TERN. A SNOWY EGRET has been at Yaquina Bay since August 27. A
breeding plumaged Golden-Plover was at the Bay City Oyster Plant and a
breeding plumaged RED KNOT was at the Bayocean Shorebird Flats on Tillamook
Bay August 26.

Up 42 GREAT EGRETS and at least 8 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have been on
Sauvie Island during the week. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was in the woods at
Round Lake on the Island August 30. Two adult WESTERN GULLS and a wing
tagged RING-BILLED GULL have been at Holman Point on the Island all week.

Large numbers of VAUX'S SWIFTS are now at Chapman School in northwest
Portland each evening. Peak numbers should be there during the next 10-15
days. On August 26, two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were at Creekside Marsh in
Beaverton.

Large flocks of migrant warblers are now being reported from many areas. A
BEWICK'S WREN was high in the Cascades at Frog Lake August 26.

A SANDERLING and four COMMON TERNS were at the mouth of Hood River August
26. A SOLITARY SANDPIPER, a WHITE-THROATED SWIFT and a VAUX'S SWIFT were at
Wamic August 26.
