Just some more observations on birds at feeders... here in a
mixed conifer forest of Guemes I see red-breasted nuthatches,
chestnut-backed chickadees and song sparrows most often at suet and
sunflower seed. There is a red-breasted sapsucker drilling a cedar
twenty feet from the suet and I've never seen it feed at the suet. I've
had a sapsucker here every winter since 1982. I would really like to know
more about this bird and its relationship to the one I saw back in '82. I
realize that is not possible but the thought of being able make this
individual identifiable is very tempting. On another note, I was out at
Deception Pass State Park last Saturday and the afternoon loon show there is
really impressive. Seemed like hundreds of common loons flying in and
out of the 'mouth' of the pass, though more likely it's about 75-100
looping loons. Any ideas on the why of this behaviour? I hope no one
was disappointed not hearing about a loon at a suet feeder. Adios
