On Friday, Dec. 15, Dan and Ila Svingen and myself found a small (4-6)
flock of Common Redpolls near Moscow. In this flock were 2 very light
birds. One described out as a Common (streaking on the rump, perhaps a
light streak or two on the undertail coverts) but the other described out
as a Hoary (white rump; white, unstreaked undertail coverts). The flock
was present on December 13 and is still there this morning, December 18.

To get to the birds...

>From the intersection of US 95 and Idaho 8 in Moscow, head east toward
Troy. From the traffic light at the Eastside Marketplace, continue on
Idaho 8 another 1.3 miles to Lenville Road. Turn left (north) onto
Lenville into the University of Idaho Plant Science Farm. Take the first
right and continue past the greenhouses to a small park-like arboretum.
Check the birches. The arboretum extends to the north another 0.25 miles
or so, and there are birches all the way to the end.
