In response to Scott Richardson's mystery bird, my immediate thought was
"Marsh Wren." I've seen them with some frequency in exactly the habitat
you described, well away from marshes but often associated with low,
sometimes flooded areas on the dunes. The Marsh Wren subspecies in western
Washington is much more obscurely marked than those in the east that are
illustrated in the field guides, and I agree with Mike that some reports of
House Wrens in unlikely places or times can be attributed to this species.
