Wildlife and Habitat
Technicians
(Two Temporary Positions)
Environmental Forestry Research
Federal Way, WA

Background: Weyerhaeuser Company is continuing to work on an innovative
multi-species habitat plan to enhance fish and wildlife habitat in Washington
State. Environmental Forestry Research seeks two Wildlife and Habitat
Technicians to work for approximately four months (April 1 through June 30) on
wildlife surveys as a part of this plan. Hours may vary from 25 to 40 per
week.

Key Functions: Collect wildlife habitat and population data. Will involve
conducting wildlife surveys in southwestern Washington managed forests. Enter
and verify data on PC spreadsheets.

Requirements: BS in wildlife ecology, management, conservation, zoology or AA
and equivalent experience. Significant coursework in wildlife ecology or
similar discipline required; some coursework in forestry and ecology of
Pacific Northwest (PNW) forests required. At least three months field
experience conducting point count surveys for PNW forest birds. Familiarity
with survey methods for terrestrial vertebrates and forest habitat
measurements. Ability to read maps and to navigate on logging roads. Valid
driver's license and excellent driving record. Must be willing to operate
standard transmission and 4WD vehicles. Ability to work both independently
and effectively as part of a field team. Candidates required to identify PNW
birds by sight and sound: must pass hearing test and bird song identification
test. Preference given to candidates with experience conducting surveys for
mammals and/or amphibians; as well as forest birds. Committed to working
safely at all times. Detail oriented, legible handwriting, excellent report
writing ability. Ability and a willingness to work under harsh field
conditions (steep slopes, logging slash, inclement weather, early hours).
Ability to plot locations accurately onto maps. Willing to work weekends and
holidays. Successful applicants must provide own housing, transportation to
field office, and calk boots. Drug test and job-related physical required.
