Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday December 21. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

A MOUNTAIN PLOVER was found on the December 19 Corvallis Christmas Count.
Drive south out of Corvallis on Highway 99W Drive past Kieger Island Road
to Herbert Avenue. Turn right on Herbert and continue over the railroad
tracks. The bird is in the field to the north just past the tracks. A farm
road runs north along the east side of the field that may take you closer
to the bird.

The PRAIRIE WARBLER continues to be seen at Eric Horvath's place in
Newport. Call Eric at (541) 867-6791 if interested in seeing this bird.

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was found on the December 15, Tillamook Count. It
was found in a boggy field behind a new blue business building near the end
of First Avenue northwest of the hospital.

The WHOOPER SWAN has not been seen at Summer Lake for over two weeks.

There were large numbers of RED PHALAROPES found on all the coastal
Christmas Counts and smaller numbers on the Willamette Valley counts. One
was at Ridgefield NWR and another at the Mollala Sewage Ponds December 15.
Most Christmas Counts reported a good number of birds with many interesting
species.

A YELLOW-BILLED LOON was seen in Coos Bay off the North Spit during the
December 17 count. Forty-five species were counted including ten
LONG-BILLED CURLEWS, over 4000 buffleheads, two OLDSQUAWS, and a HARRIS'
SPARROW.

The December 18, Florence Count found 126 species including an unidentified
empidonax flycatcher.

Six or seven OLDSQUAWS are now in Yaquina Bay including two nice adult
males. The PALM WARBLER continues to be seen around the entrance to the
Marine Science Center. MARBLED MURRELETS and ANCIENT MURRELETS continue to
be seen off Boiler Bay and Yaquina Head. ROCK SANDPIPERS continue to be
seen at Depoe Bay. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is being seen at Hidden Valley
near Toledo.

The December 15 Tillamook Count found 144 species including a SABINE'S
GULL, a HEERMANN'S GULL, GOSHAWK and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.

A GYRFALCON and a SNOW BUNTING was on Clatsop Beach north of the Sunset
Beach accesson the December 17 Columbia Estuary Count. That day a
MOCKINGBIRD was found on the east side of the Lewis and Clark River off
Clover Lane near the old Highway 101 bridge south of Astoria. A MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRD was at the Shorebird Flats at the South Jetty of the Columbia
River that day.

The Salem Count taken December 17 found 109 species including a
RED-THROATED LOON, a BRANT, a LONG-EARED OWL, and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.

The Corvallis Count tallied a record 123 species. Among the many
interesting birds were a number of WHITE-THOATED SPARROWS, GREATER SCAUP,
SPOTTED OWL, LEWIS' WOODPECKER, and a SWAMP SPARROW.

The Klamath Falls Count recorded 97 species including a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK
and 129 EARED GREBES.

The SCRUB JAY continues to be seen near Fossil in Central Oregon.

The Sauvie Island and the Coquille Valley Christmas Counts will be run
Saturday December 23, and the Dallas Count will be on Tuesday December 26.
They could use some help.

Thats it for this week.
