Subj: Naselle Brambling

Why is that Brambling in Naselle constantly being referred to as a male? Am
I missing something? Did I see a different bird? The bird looks exactly
(well, almost exactly) like the very last image on page 442-43 of the
National Geographic N.A. Bird Guide, my only source available to me for that
species. It has a plain buff / gray face and very distinctive black
bordering a broad gray median nape stripes. Are the field guides in error?
Or is it me? If it's me, I can take the instructive correction.
