Just home for lunch--channel 5 ran a story on a Black-footed Albatross that
has been in wildlife rehab for several months. Apparently it's well now,
but will never fly again. It also does quite well with humans.

The rehab center is looking for donations to cover the $3,000 to air
freight this bird to a zoo in Holland. They apparently made 40 inquiries
and that was the only place that wanted it.

My question is why Holland? Are albatrosses difficult to care for, as in
expensive diet? Why not one of the zoos along the North American west
coast. I can't say I've seen any in captivity? There are several west coast
zoos with seabird collections. Reason also says that these birds are common
enough that if a zoo wanted one, they already would?
