I once stumbled onto a female Ruffed Grouse with a youngish brood near Fort
Nelson in NE B.C. long ago. I nearly had a heart attack when she blasted me
with a guttural scream from the side of the trail. I assume this serves two
purposes: to frighten off the potential danger; and to warn the young
chicks of danger. The chicks did indeed run for cover.
