Al, it does my heart good to see a world-class birder like you stumped by a
mere gull. Anyway, I digress... I have several photos of 1st-winter SBGU
from my N. Pacific voyages. I will copy them and send them along (e-mail me
your mailing address, please). If memory serves, I got pretty good at
separating the young age classes of SBGU and HEGU by the undertail coverts:
SBGU had a distinct warm brown irregular "tiger-stripe" barring on the
undertail coverts whereas HEGU was a more cold brown and not as distinct.
Will have a look at the slides tonight. Note I will be down in Vancouver,
BC for a couple of weeks starting tonight so may not get to this for a
while.
