"nm" normally means "nautical mile". This is the distance you travel
in one hour if you're moving at one knot ("knot" is a speed, not
distance, unit, a bit confusing to those used to "mile" and
"miles per hour").

A nanometer is a very tiny distance indeed, not far enough from shore
to reliably get your tootsies wet! :)

(millisecond is a second x 10^-3, microsecond is a second x 10^-6,
and a nanosecond is a second x 10^-9 or about the time an electrical
impulse takes to travel roughly 11 inches down a copper wire!).
