This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

The small flock of 8-10 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen through
December 20 by many folks at the University of Idaho Plant Science Farm
just east of Moscow, Idaho. The HOARY REDPOLL was still with the
flock. If you go looking for the Hoary, be careful, there's also one very
light Common in the flock. From the Eastside Marketplace on the east
edge of Moscow, along Idaho 8, go about 1 mile to Lenville Road. Turn
left, north, onto Lenville. Follow it in, past the greenhouses and to the
arboretum area. Look in the birches.

Greg and Marty Hirth saw a single, singing BEWICK'S WREN at the top of
Coyote Grade in northern Nez Perce County, Idaho, December 18. Also
there was a GOLDEN EAGLE. The NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL near
Moscow was last seen December 20. Give me a call at 208-883-0943 if
you'd like more info on these species.

Another NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was on Mormon Grade on
December 16, according to Mike Denny. The grade is southeast of Walla
Walla. Washington DeLomre p. 41, d-8.

Mike Denny reports a HARRIS' SPARROW in the northeast section of
Dixie, Washington on December 16. Dixie is 8 miles east of Walla Walla
along US 12 and the bird was below the cemetery. Washington DeLomre
p. 41, half way between c- and d-7.

NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS were frequent this past week. Cindy
McCormack reports one December 22 from Beauty Bay on Lake Coeur
d'Alene, Idaho. She found it about 0.25 miles up Beauty Creek Road (aka
Forest Service Road 438). Take I-90 east from CdA to exit 22 and Idaho
97. Follow it about 2 miles. Also there were 23 BALD EAGLES. Idaho
DeLorme p. 60, b-2.

Mike Denny reported two owls this past week. The first was on McKay
Grade southeast of Walla Walla on December 16 and another was seen
on the road just north of McKay Grade on December 20. Also on McKay
Grade were 160 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES. Washington DeLorme
p. 41, d-8.

Mike also reports 5 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES and 3 CANYON
WRENS from Little Goose Dam on the Snake River in northern Columbia
County, Washington. Across the river, 4 miles downstream from the
dam, at the mouth of Rock Creek, Mike also had a VIRGINIA RAIL and a
single MARSH WREN. Washington DeLorme p. 55, d-8. The same day,
farther downstream at Ice Harbor Dam, just east of Pasco, Mike reports a
single GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL and a HERRING GULL. Washington
DeLorme p. 40, c-1.

Mike reports 2 LONG-EARED OWLS form Windust Park in southern
Franklin County, Washington on December 22. The park is downstream
from Lower Monumental Dam, south of Kahlotus. Washington DeLorme
p. 54, d-4.

Dan Svingen reports there are now 6 DUNLIN at Mann Lake, east of
Lewiston, Idaho. He saw the birds on December 17. Call me at
208-883-0943 for directions.

Some other interesting sightings for the week include a RED-NECKED
GREBE at McNary NWR east of Pasco, Washington. Mike Denny saw the
bird December 22 in Casey Pond right along US 12. Washington
DeLorme p. 40, c-1. Mike also reports an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER
in his College Place, Washington, yard on the 16th, and two GREATER
YELLOWLEGS in the Mill Creek Reservoir (aka Bennington Lake) just east
of Walla Walla.

Good birding!
