Howell & Webb's Field Guide to the birds of Mexico (title may be at variance
with this--I'm away from my office) is highly recommended, although it's a
big sucker.

Go into the University Book Store or Wide World Books and Maps and find the latest Yucatan travel guide that looks good to you. They usually say quite a bit
about the ruins as well as being generally helpful.
