You certainly need Howell and Webb, A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and
Northern Central America (Oxford) - not very portable but the most complete
piece of info you will find. There are a number of good books on the ruins
- I found Coe's "The Maya" (Thames and Hudson) to be a very good general
intro, but there are others. If you are going to Cozumel don't miss the
reefs and take a good coral reef fish guide - again, there are several
including one or two available in waterproof underwater editions.
