Today, December 27, the Hoary Redpoll was seen near Moscow by Mike and
Merry Lynn Denny and myself. These birds have now been seen for two weeks.
We were able to watch two birds for 90 minutes at about 15-20 feet as they
fed in birch trees. Both had immaculate white undertail coverts, white,
streak-less backs, and white rumps. The Denny's took some photos.
To get to the birds...
>From the intersection of US 95 and Idaho 8 on the south side of Moscow,
take Idaho 8 east toward Troy. From the traffic light at the Eastside
Marketplace, continue east 1.3 miles to Lenville Road. Turn left (north)
onto Lenville and follow the gravel road into the Univ. of Idaho Plant
Science Farm. Take the first right, go past the greenhouses, and
continue to the "arboretum". The birds feed in the birches. If you
can't find them right away, walk north through the arboretum. At the far
north end are several more birch trees where they often feed.
If you come searching during the week, stop by the Research Nursery and
see if I'm in. I'd be happy to walk down there with you. Let the
hotline know of your successes (882-6195).
