A GYRFALCON was found December 26 three and a half miles south of Wasco,
Sherman County. It was eating a Mallard beside Highway 206 and allowed a
close approach.

The Coquille Valley Count taken December 23 broke a number of state
records. The 159 species tallied was a new state record. The 19
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 8 PEREGRINE FALCONS, 1007 ANCIENT MURRELETS and 59
BLACK PHOEBES wree all state highs. The count also recorded two SANDHILL

up to 45 SNOW BUNTINGS are along Clatsop Beach about a mile north of the
Sunset Beach access.

The majority of the Willamette Valley RED PHALAROPES were gone by Christmas
Day. They are also much reduced along the Coast.

Two TRUMPETER SWANS were along Highway 30 at Deer Island December 21. The
December 23 Sauvie Island Count found 118 species. A LESSER YELLOWLEGS was
found in a flock of 40 GREATER YELLOWLEGS on the east side of the Island.
Nearby was a late COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.

A BLUE-WINGED TEAL was at Baskett Slough Refuge December 22. It was not
found on the Dallas Count December 26. Among the 100 species that were
found were CINNAMON TEAL, WRENTIT, CHIPPING SPARROW, and SPOTTED OWL.

SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen during the week near Canby and south of
Independance. Good numbers of LEWIS' WOODPECKERS are still being seen near
Parrydale and near Mollala.

The SAY'S PHOEBE is still at the E.E. Wilson Refuge north of Corvallis.
Another was found December 22 along Rifle Range Road west of the Refuge.
