At the Sauvie Island CBC last week, Jeff Gilligan and Owen Schmidt found
a Black-shouldered Kite just south of Scappoose. I relocated the bird
yesterday. From Hwy 26, turn right on Johnson Landing Rd, just north of
the Columbia COunty line. I found the bird after I had turned onto Dike
Rd (which branches off of Johnson Landing after about half a mile (make a
10 o'clock left). I found the bird by scanning northwest of the road; I
parked in some of the moorage driveways to scan as shoudler room is very
limited so be careful. The bird was actively hunting yesterday, but was
at a good ditance away from the road. The bird appeared to be an adult.
About half an hour after I first found it, the bird was relocated perched
on a small tree. Those county listers and those who might not have seen
this speceis before may want to go after this bird near Portland. If I
see it again, I'll repost. Happy New Year. RK
