I (Kas) saw the small flock of 8-10 COMMON REDPOLLS Thursday, December
28 at the University of Idaho Plant Science Farm just east of Moscow,
Idaho. The HOARY REDPOLL was still with the flock, and closer
examination of the other light bird, at distances of less than 20 feet, are
making several of us call it a Hoary as well. From the Eastside
Marketplace on the east edge of Moscow, along Idaho 8, go about 1 mile
to milepost 4.4 and Lenville Road. Turn left, north, onto Lenville. Follow
it in, past the greenhouses and to the arboretum area. Look in the
birches.

The REDPOLL flock was still present on December 30. The nursery also
had a mixed flock of BOHEMIAN and CEDAR WAXWINGS on the 30th. (Dale)

The NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL near Moscow is still being seen -- last
seen on Wednesday, the 27th. Give me a call at 208-883-0943 if you'd
like more info.

John Gatchet called in two female GREAT-TAILED GRACKLES in Marsing,
Idaho, about 20 miles west of Boise, on December 23 and 24. Take
Idaho 55 to Marsing, cross the Snake River and immediately turn left
(south) into the park. The birds were seen at the edge of the parking lot
and occasionally foraging with American Widgeon in the grass. Idaho
DeLorme p. 34, c-1.

John and Marty Hirth report 2 NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS along West
Side Road northwest of Bonners Ferry, Idaho on December 26. Idaho
DeLorme p. 48, a-3. The Hirths also report a single THAYER'S GULL in a
flock of 60 HERRING GULLS in a field just north of Fighting Creek Landfill.
Fighting Creek Landfill is about 14 miles south of Coeur d'Alene along US
95 in Kootenai County. The entrance is on the west side of the road at
mile post 415.4. Check in with the manager in the blue building to ask
permission and where they are dumping garbage. It's best to call ahead
at 208-769-4402.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen in both Idaho and Washington.
The Hirths report 6 birds at the cross-country ski parking lot atop Mount
Spokane on the 27th. Washington DeLorme p. 89, a-7. Dan Svingen
reports two flocks south southeast of Grangeville, Idaho that same day.
A flock of 10 birds was 9 miles south of the Red River Ranger Station
along Forest Service Road 222 (aka Dixie-Red River Road) and a flock of
15 birds was 10.5 miles south of the station. Dan also reports a
NORTHERN GOSHAWK 1 mile south of the station. Idaho DeLorme p. 52,
a-1.

A PRAIRIE FALCON was seen 2 miles northeast of Pullman, Washington,
on December 27 by John and Marty Hirth. The bird was along Whelan
Road. Take Washington 27 north out of Pullman. Whelan Road heads
east opposite the road to Albion. Washington DeLorme p. 57, b-7.

John and Marty Hirth report 3 DUNLIN chipping in a hole in Lake Pend
Oreille on December 27. The birds were off Third Street in Sandpoint.

Mike Denny had a few sightings from Walla Walla. He saw one GREATER
YELLOWLEGS in the Mill Creek Reservoir (aka Bennington Lake) just east
of Walla Walla, on December 28th. The same day, he had an AMERICAN
DIPPER and a single NORTHERN SHRIKE at Rooks Park, also east of Walla
Walla, off Mill Road.

Good birding!
