I am searching for papers and research related to white plumage anomalies in
birds, in particular- dark-eyed juncos. I live in Leavenworth and 1-2 months
after the fires subsided in our area we had a large flock of juncos hit our
feeders. At least 5 individuals had patches of white feathers intead of normal
plumage on various portions of their body. One had white cheek patches, another
with a white band at the back of the black hood, etc. We managed to band a few
of these individuals and have photo documentation. We believe this plumage
anomalie could be due to the stress brought on by the fire while the birds were
in a period of partial molt. Although the flock has left our location, a Junco
with a similar type of plumage variation was recently seen in Wenatchee about 25
miles from our location. We have been at the same location for over 5 years and
this is the first time we have observed these variations. Has any one else seen
this occur? Any referrals to research or papers on this topic would be
appreciated.
