About a 1 1/2 years ago I saw a Sharp Shinned trying roust a group of House
Sparrows and Dark Eyed Juncos. They had been feeding at a neighbor's feeder.
The sparrows were sheltered in a dense but sparsely leafed deciduous shrub.
The hawk sat in a small apple tree not a foot away from the shrub and would
repeatedly "rush" the shrub with much wing action. The entire time the
sparrows were deathly quiet. Three or four time the hawk actually dove into
the shrub and messed about (I couldn't really see what was happening). At
these times the little birds were chirping up a storm. It was that which
caught my attention in the 1st place. When the hawk popped out...not a sound
from them, quite a striking contrast. Eventually he flushed a Junco from the
back of the shrub. The hawk was out of the apple tree, over the shrub and
down around the house after the Junco in a heartbeat, very exciting. They
went around the neighbor's house so I couldn't see the end result. It didn't
look good for the Junco though.
