I think the Northern Shrike - Yellow-rumped Warbler interaction is pretty
common; I've seen it several times in eastern Washington in early spring,
as you described sometimes the warbler flying high up into the sky, never
with a capture. One extensive study showed that bird-eating hawks are
successful no more than 10% of the time, and I imagine shrikes are no
different.
