northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, February 24, 1995.
.
On February 18 Cindy McCormick observed the Moscow SNOWY OWL on
the University of Idaho cattle farms west of Moscow near the
Washington border. Look for the bird between the Wal-Mart parking
lot, the Old Moscow-Pullman Road, and campus, especially west of
the sewage treatment plant.
.
Dick Johnson reports a BARRED OWL on the Washington State
University campus on February 23. The bird was in a pine tree
east of the glass walkway between Johnson Hall and the Johnson
Hall Annex. You can get really great views of the bird from the
second or third floors.
.
February 19 Mike Denny reported 6 GLAUCOUS GULLS and 2 WESTERN
GULLS on the poop piles just north of Walluwa, Washington, along
US 12. See Washington DeLorme p. 40, c-1. Mike also saw a MUTE
SWAN in the display pool at McNary NWR, about 3.5 miles north of
the poop piles on the west side of US 12. On the 24th, the MUTE
SWAN was still present, and at the display pond at McNary National
Wildlife Refuge Headquarters Mike observed a weird Mallard x
Northern Pintail Hybrid.
.
Also on February 19 Mike saw 2 DUNLIN at the Walla Walla River
Delta, just north of the junction of US 12 and US 730. See
Washington DeLorme p. 40, d-1.
.
Mike Denny reports 2 adult FERRUGINOUS HAWKS on February 19. One
bird was 0.5 mile south of Touchet along the Touchet-Gardena
Road. Another bird was 2 miles south of US 12 along Byrnes Road.
Byrnes road is about 0.75 mile west of Touchet. Also along Byrnes
Road was a KRIDER'S RED-TAILED HAWK. See Washington DeLorme p.
40, d-3.
.
Dan Svingen reports a HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK in southeastern
Washington on February 18. The bird was along US 12 near mile
post 373, about 60 miles from Lewiston. Dan also reports seeing a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at Malheur NWR about 30 miles south of Burns
on February 17.
.
A couple of Moscow-Lewiston sightings of interest. A CANVASBACK
was at the west levee pond on February 22 according to John and
Amy Roberson. The next day they report 2 COMMON MERGANSERS on the
south fork of the Palouse River 2 miles northwest of Pullman. See
Washington DeLorme p. 57, halfway between b- and c-7.

Good birding!
