Don,

Myself, 2 other banders from Aberdeen, Scotland have been helping out
scientists from Tromso, Norway for the last 6 years. We have a study
site on the Nordkinnhalvoya penninsula (one east of NordKapp, at71
degrees N, 28 degrees E) where we have been banding shorebirds -
looking at all the usual stuff, time of arrival, breeding success,
etc as well as looking rodent numbers to see if there is a
correlation with bird breeding success - more rodents keep foxes and
skua well fed hence more birds, no rodents no birds.

The main species are Dunlin, Little Stint, Red necked Phalarope,
Turnstone (ruddy) but we also band anything that moves.

Other work involves surveying proposed conservation sites for the
Norwegian government.


Great, great fun, but very cold.



As far as a resume is concerned, what are you looking for ? In the UK
banders have complete freedom, apart from restrictions on disturbing
rare nesting birds, so my experience is wide ranging (roughly 140
species banded). Annual totals usually 2000+, sometimes as high as
5000 (if it is a good seabird year). Main work has been on seabirds,
shorebirds and snow buntings (2 papers). Birds of prey, less so. I
band a couple of dozen every year - mainly falcons (kestrel, merlin)
and hawks (buzzard, same size as a Red tail).

I can get together a resume, UK licence and references if you need
them.
